I was fluttered when Nozstock crew asked me for the second time to design their image and website. I’m always happy to work in the music environment, I love doodle , dysmo characters and is nice to put on a hold corporates design for a while. Nozstock is a small but very diverse festival: a curious amalgamation of performance, art, electronic supersounds and good old-fashioned guitar-strumming and drum-bashing, so it has been a yummy challenge to find the right feel for the characters illustration

This week

Is  now time to built up my own world, I need characters and I want to define a quicker style to populate my illustrations, I definitely want to keep an eye on compositions and simple geometry ,but  I don’t want to force everything and go too vector style drawing perfectly round heads and squared clouds, I’d like to keep  a bit of figurative drawing, yet the final image should be as simple as graphic design. Apparently I have it all set only.. I’m yet not sure how to actually get there. I started with this character using just a couple of colors, big realistic eyes are banned, but small points for eyes are just too cute for what I’m trying to get, absence of eyes is just about perfect. Although eyes are among my favorite doodling subject I must say I’m going to find out how expressive can a face be with no eyes at all.So far so good. Any suggestion?

LEARN:
Find the right tool to get what you need in no time. Nowadays there is one for sure, use some time to find it and spend less time realizing what you have in mind. It will always work. and your work will gain slickness with a new fresher approach.

PRODUCE:
I’m setting up a place to stay for the longest period in the last 12 years, is more fun than what I expected, it  also left me no time in front of any laptop or scratch book , then I found  sketchbook app for Iphone, using its mirror tool and the tip of my finger, is like sketching into the air, I totally love it!

LEARN:
GESTALT mon amour : the visual world is so complex that the mind has developed strategies for coping with the confusion. The mind tries to find the simplest solution to a problem. One of the ways it does this is to form groups of items that have certain characteristics in common. Most of what gestalt studies is concerned with how these groups are formed and what effect they have on perception. The most fascinating principle to me isCLOSURE : starting from the idea  that a complex object is really a group of simple items that the mind puts together as a single entity, giving a few essential elements the mind supplies the missing pieces in a composition.

PRODUCE:
Another piece for Flooded, something about this project is helping me defining a style, I really like mixing texture, colors and organic shapes in a stable composition. I’ve always loved all kind  of watery/sea related creature and as I’m almost going crazy in the attempt to set up a lovely nest for my incredibly fluffy family while actually creating a micro universe mini-me shaped, I developed a certain passion for visual complexity, universal theory and whatever winks at cosmic creation and connection between micro and macro. Well it’s beginning to show :)

First of all any comments caresses my little Ego who’s always screaming for more and calms the beast that would see me retouching to infinity, plus is incredibly interesting and refreshing follow your threads to push the idea a bit further. Honestly I’m sucking at “social hero” this month (but I’m getting quite an ace at ” carpenter/mum/ikea junky.. gosh) so I really couldn’t expect a grate traffic on my blog, so again thank you and stick around for more !!

LEARN:
I always found FIGURE-GROUND perception very fascinating.

This week I read about it again and decided to try out something.I love drawing sketching and texturing, when I start an illustration I often think of something close to life drawing, but when I check out someone else portfolio what strikes me most is a good piece of graphic. In more than one occasion I found myself admiring a well dispose set of typographic characters rather then a perfectly shaded portrait. As I think many other designer I grown a certain awareness for typography in the last years and I’d like to mix types and organic shapes in my illustration.

I joined deviantart where I can also publish my journal, hoping to get more feedback and ta-daaah I was also invited to join Behance Network which I’m still filling up.
Let’s see how many critiques I can collect being art of this two major sharing platforms.

LEARN:
I have the tendency to refine and tune my illustrations a bit too much with the result of loosing a certain freshness, so I felt like starting from scratches and try to stick to strict design theories and principles.From the very beginning: COLOR THEORY

PRODUCE:
Back to basics, pencil sketches, and simple texturing. I find the world dull very funny for laking brightness is in term of coloring and illustrating a pretty exiting concept. I want to mix typography and hand drawing for a while and see what comes up, so I create an artwork about dulling a color.

SHARE:
I should give a bust to my online presence as an illustrator, I’d like to define a style a bit more before starting a proper campaign posting my portfolio on every sharing platform, for this week I submitted a piece from Songs of Innocence to semi-permanent a super exiting design event consisting of a conference and side events.

I can’t wait to know if they’re going to include my piece in the book! I enjoyed very much refreshing some basic theories, after some years of experience in the field, the principles of design make more sense or simply a new one, I definitely recommend refreshing this notions from time to time. This artwork is more of a sketch than what I’m use to produce, I like the overall atmosphere I can see a deadline is already bringing freshness to my work :)

This is the first  post documenting my journey to be an illustrator.
I love drawing I’m crazy for illustration, I started off my career as graphic and web designer, I need to switch to illustration already !!

I’ll keep a weekly journal for two reasons:

1. To encourage others kick off their vocation and see how web 2.0 can help.
I’m obsessively checking out other illustrators activity. I found a tons inspiring portfolios, a few catchy blogs and not many of them were giving advice or recounting the process of actually getting there.
I haven’t spent much time in Italy (my home country) in the last 8 years, I’ll stick more around for the next to come as I’m going to give birth to a magic evil bean who’s kicking into my belly in this very moment (!!). Back home I found a growing web 2.0 community (very refreshing around here) and an idea of the illustrator profession quite stiff and outdated, generally involved with children publishing only. I hope this journal will help developing interest and a slightly different approach to illustration in Italy too.

2. To keep myself accountable and to follow through with my dream.
Keeping a personal deadline had always been hard for me. I always let something else take precedent. Documenting the process will help keeping myself accountable and sharing my progress will hopefully generate some response from all of you guys who shares my passion and could give preciousss feedbacks comments and critiques. My goal in all this? To become a full-time illustrator already !!

There are three essential area I need to keep constantly up with: LEARN PRODUCE & SHARE

LEARN:
Yess I still need to learn, and I don’t think this is going to end anytime soon. I love trying out new techniques and mix different styles, I believe is essential to try doing something you suck at, quite often, to keep yourself aware of new things and push your limits a bit further. Many times I found I didn’t think to be able to do something, till I actually tried doing it. There are so many awesome tutorials online nowadays it would be a crime not to do at least one per week.

PRODUCE:
Learning and checking out new stuff online is very useful and inspiring but I often get carried away and end my day with a bunch of new ideas that will sum up without finding a production. This is baaaad very bad for my head gets filled up and risks to explode. As I mentioned I love mixing styles and trying different things, but I do need to come up with a unique consistent style. I need to drastically increase my production and put together a consistent portfolio of illustration .. already !!

SHARE:
Sharing will help myself keeping a personal schedule, getting feedback on what I’m doing, creating interest around something I love, finding new people to work with, promote myself and getting exposure, you know, sharing is essential! Probably the most important effect sharing will have on this process is slickness: get inspired, create an artwork and share it on a weekly basis will help me not to get lost into doodling and retouching obsessively, which is at the moment my worst habit :)

he’d rather serve a glass of tap water with a smile than the best cocktail in the world with a sad face, but he does serves the best cocktails I ever tried unfolding to your hears only the origins of gin and sending your papillae to an exiting new adventure in taste.
I drew, basing on his cocktail list, a map for taste riders, it will help choosing an area, it won’t prevent getting lost into the flavors!

London Zoo flyer and poster, Uk 2008

Indo commissioned this poster and a flayer set for London Zoo events. Their identity based on early century freak show is very inspiring illustration wise, it was a sneaky pleasure to come up with this earth oddity for such a beastie line up!

Songs of Innocence Illustration set. Lisbon 2009

This winter I was so lucky to collaborate with Filipe Fàisca who commissioned an illustration set for Fashion Clinic window shop, displaying Spring 2009 collection. The illustration set take impulse from a mix between classic mythology and fairy tail’s iconography, blend together in a classic children illustration style.

WeirdFishes/Arpeggi illustration set for soundtrack. Berlin 2008

WeirdFishes/Arpeggi is a self commissioned project. Reading “I barbari” by Alessandro Baricco inspired this illustrations, while at it I realized I was listening to WeirdFishes/Arpeggi by Radiohead, everything was magically connected!
